A Poetic Memoir Of My Journey Through Life

A John Lennon Quote

YES♥ YES♥ YES!!!!

“You don’t need anybody to tell you who you are or what you are. You are what you are!”  John Lennon

I hate labels… though I do use them. I want to express why I choose to use labels and why I chose my blog name.

First off… I chose “bipolarmuse” because it is what it is. LOL. I am bipolar and I love to write poetry… but more importantly, I am hoping that anyone searching about anything “bipolar” will come across my blog. I want people to know they are not alone in the diagnosis and that there certainly is hope even when you feel you have lost it all. “A day at a time… and each day will be different than the last.”

I want people to know they do not need to hide and be afraid… I want to inspire… be a guiding light.

Of course, my poetry is, more often than not, touched with a little sadness… but there is nothing wrong with that because it helps me to release negativity. A healthy way to release it. And I like to counteract that with a post that is inspiring and hopeful.

So yes, I do use labels with myself and I am ok with that because I hope that it will serve a larger purpose.

Another reason that really is important to me is in regards to my son on the Autism Spectrum. Many people who are around him briefly would think he was completely “normal” (for lack of a better word)… yet he was developing late, having social issues, problems with food texture, and so on. I could literally go on and on.

For me… getting his diagnosis was not about placing a “label” on him… it was about taking the initiative to get him into early childhood intervention programs so that he would be better prepared for school, and to help him along in communication and social activities. With his diagnosis, I was able to get the ball rollin’ with the type of care and structure he needed to help him succeed. He has amazed me in all the ways that he has excelled… and the early intervention was key.

Do these labels define us?? Absolutely not! We are who we are… and that is perfectly imperfect.

♥ I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and that you enjoy this Fathers Day weekend. ♥

  2. It is inspiring to read the real parts of your life. You are brave and you set a beautiful example for your son. I can relate to the part of “labelling.”
It’s a positive read at this hour of dark, infusing truth. The blog name connects your soul.
    Much love and blessings.

  5. Sounds like the truth falls somewhere between John and labels.
Go you for using the labels to your son’s advantage!

And go you for showing that bipolar is not the end-all be-all of who you are!

  9. Labelling, like logic, like an axe, can be a indispensable tool if used properly, but can also be a hindrance, harmful or even dangerous when used inappropriately. (Also Mental Health Records? )

  10. Very true, it certainly can be a hindrance… and having a mental health paper trail of these labels can be a problem as well.
I just try to use them an a appropriate manner… and hope that my message is heard. ♥

    • You seem to me to do fine with it. :)
